Sepan cuantos esta carta vieren como yo, Tomás Ruiz de Aguilar, vecino de esta villa, estando enfermo del cuerpo y sano de la voluntad, otorgo mi testamento en la forma siguiente. Declaro que fui casado según orden de la Santa Madre Iglesia con doña Isabel Montoya, y durante nuestro matrimonio tuvimos por nuestros hijos legítimos a [[Francisco]], [[Josefa]] y [[Antonio]]. Declaro por mis bienes una casa de tapia y teja en la plaza, dos mulas y un solar, y mando que se repartan entre ellos por iguales partes.

Catíos, nutabes, tahamíes, zenúes, muiscas. Sembraban maíz en las laderas, trabajaban el oro mejor que nadie en América y cambiaban sal por algodón. Muchos quedaron en los libros de la Colonia con un nombre cristiano y el apellido de su encomendero.

Catíos, Nutabes, Tahamíes, Zenúes, Muiscas. They farmed maize on the slopes, worked gold better than anyone in the Americas and traded salt for cotton. Many entered the colonial books with a Christian name and the surname of their encomendero.

Capitanes, escribanos, mineros y comerciantes de Castilla, Andalucía, Extremadura, el País Vasco, Canarias y Portugal. Algunos venían de familias conversas que cambiaron de nombre para cruzar el océano.

Captains, notaries, miners and merchants from Castile, Andalusia, Extremadura, the Basque Country, the Canaries and Portugal. Some came from converso families who changed their names to cross the ocean.

Hombres y mujeres de África occidental y central, llevados a las minas de oro de Remedios, Zaragoza y el Chocó. Muchos compraron su libertad con el oro del río, y esa carta de libertad quedó en una notaría.

Men and women from West and Central Africa, taken to the gold mines of Remedios, Zaragoza and the Chocó. Many bought their freedom with river gold, and that letter of freedom was recorded by a notary.

En tres o cuatro generaciones las hebras se trenzaron. Los libros separaban a la gente en «blancos», «mestizos», «pardos» o «indios», pero las familias no obedecían a los libros. Por eso su árbol casi nunca es de un solo color.

Within three or four generations the strands were braided. The books sorted people into “white”, “mestizo”, “pardo” or “native”, but families did not obey the books. That is why your tree is almost never a single color.
